El chirimoyo es un árbol caducifolio de crecimiento lento, que puede adquirir en su madurez una altura de 7 a 8 m, y exuberante follaje; de porte erguido y a veces ramificado irregularmente. El tallo es cilíndrico, de corteza gruesa. Posee un sistema radicular muy superficial y ramificado, originando dos o tres pisos a diferentes profundidades, pero poco profundos. El árbol requiere de climas secos donde no llueva mucho y donde la temperatura no presente extremos de calor ni de frío. En el trópico busca para crecer alturas entre 1000 y 2000msnm y es sensible a los ataques de hongos y otras plagas. Además de su uso en helados, los productores bolivianos han empezado la comercialización de la pulpa de la fruta en frascos que contienen sólo la pulpa y permiten preservar su contenido durante varios meses. También venden helados, licor de chirimoya, jugos, dulces y tortas, entre otros; no se recomienda en la dieta de diabéticos.
